Origin and definition

The term burkini comes from the contraction of “burqa” and “bikini”. Its invention is attributed to Aheda Zanetti , an Australian designer of Lebanese origin, around 2004.

Unlike the burqa, the burkini does not cover the face : only the hands, feet and face remain visible.

It generally consists of two or three pieces: long tunic or covering top, pants (or integrated leggings), integrated hood or hat.

Why wear a burkini?

Respect for beliefs & modesty : for women who wish to remain covered while enjoying the beach, the pool or water activities.

Comfort and performance : modern models offer technical fabrics: breathable, quick-drying, UV protection, chlorine and salt resistance.

Freedom of movement : well cut, with ties or a suitable design (leggings, loose fit), a burkini allows you to swim, move, jump without worry.

The essential technical characteristics

Criteria Why it matters
Premium fabric (UPF 50+, chlorine/salt resistant) To last longer, protect from the sun, maintain comfort and color.
Covering cut + well-fitting design To avoid floating, avoid discomfort in the water, and ensure modesty.
Quick drying & softness For comfort, avoid irritation or unpleasant sensations.
Built-in support (e.g., attachment between top and bottom, cups, ankle leggings) To feel safe, not having to constantly readjust.

Use & practical life

The burkini is ideal for all aquatic activities: bathing, swimming, aquagym, beach, spa...

It washes like a swimsuit: fresh water + mild soap + drying away from direct sunlight to preserve the colors and material.

For transport and storage: avoid rough surfaces which damage the fabric.

Burkini vs. other swimsuits

Kind Blanket Main use
Bikini / two-piece swimsuit reveals certain parts tanning, light bathing
Classic one-piece swimsuit covers bust, but not always arms/legs swimming, classic aesthetics
Burkini covers arms, legs, often hood, face uncovered modest, water sports, freedom of movement

In conclusion

The burkini is the perfect compromise for modest women who don't want to give up the beach, the pool, or water sports. With the right style, technical fabric, assured fit, and reliable support, it's an outfit that gives you confidence, freedom, and elegance.
